Internship regulations Transport Engineering and Mobility (as of 01.09.2021)

Regulations for the study-related internship in the Master's Program in Transport Engineering and Mobility.

Important: This is not a legally binding version of the examination regulations. Only the German original version is valid!

To adequately understand the technical lectures and exercises, as well as to prepare for future professional work, it is indispensable to provide an illustrative lesson on the practical basics of the chosen profession. The practical instruction of students at technical universities is one of the essential prerequisites for successful studies and is an integral component of the course of study.

During the internship, students should learn to apply the knowledge they have acquired so far and experience the operational and social structures of the work environment at an internship position.

Students are responsible for seeking a suitable internship position.

The internship relationship becomes legally binding through the internship between the internship office and the intern. The contract should define all rights and obligations of the intern and the internship office.

Working time lost through illness must be made up. In the event of absence, the intern should request an extension of the contract in order to be able to complete the period of training to the necessary extent.

At the end of the internship, the intern should receive a certificate from the internship office stating the duration in each department and the number of days of absence due to illness and leave.

Information on compulsory insurance can be obtained from the respective health insurance company. Insurance coverage for internships abroad is provided by a training insurance policy taken out by the intern or by the internship company.

For the internship, 8 to 16 weeks are planned as part of the Master's degree in Transport Engineering and Mobility. It is also possible to complete two internships of 8 weeks each. In this case, two reports and two presentations must be prepared and given.

Up to 1.25 CP per week can be credited for the internship module. The credit is awarded for periods of 8, 12 and 16 weeks (or twice 8 weeks). A deviating duration will be assigned to the corresponding lower internship duration.

A mentor of the company must supervise the internship. He or she ensures that the interns have meaningful activities in line with the company's capabilities. The activities of the internship should correspond to the internship guidelines. He or she will instruct the intern in conversations and discussions.

Before starting the internship, interns must provide confirmation of supervision from a professor involved in research and teaching at RWTH Aachen University in the degree program Transport Engineering and Mobility. Assistant lecturers and research assistants may assist in the supervision. The supervising professor will provide technical support during the internship.

A report must be written covering the entire internship period. The scope of the report should be based on three machine-generated DIN A4 pages per week completed.

Interns must give an oral presentation of the internship they have completed at the chair of the supervising professor.

Notification of passing or failing the ungraded performance must be made not later than eight weeks after the submission deadline. If this announcement is not made in due time, the Examination Board is entitled to appoint other examiners. The certificate of the completed internship weeks and intern’s performance must be sent by the chair to the Central Examination Office.

Decisions of the supervising professor may be appealed to the examination board.

  1. Internship position

Since this course of studies is primarily intended to prepare students for the German job market, internships should preferably be in Germany. For good reasons, the internship position may also be located abroad.
  2. Recognitions from previous practical activities

Professional experience and practical activities from before the studies cannot be credited as an internship in the Master of Transport Engineering and Mobility.
  3. Procedure for recognition

If you are accepted for a suitable internship, you will have to find a supervisor at RWTH Aachen University in the degree program Transport Engineering and Mobility for professional guidance. As soon as you receive the confirmation of a professor or a chair for the supervision, you can start the internship and sign the contract. To have your internship accepted, please fill out the internship control sheet and submit it to the chair responsible.

If there is no confirmation of a chair at the beginning of the internship, it cannot be guaranteed that CP can be achieved for the internship.
