Prerequisites

One of the prerequisites for getting accepted to this master program is a first university degree, with which the necessary engineering background education can be proven as outlined in the exam regulations. The students should have completed 18 ECTS CP in mathematics/statistics (at least 14 ECTS CP in mathematics and 2 ECTS CP in statistics), 11 ECTS CP in mechanics and 5 ECTS CP in the field of basic electrical engineering. Furthermore, they have to prove knowledge equivalent to at least 10 ECTS CP in at least two of the topics construction material science, hydromechanics, thermodynamics, or general physics. Subject-specific knowledge worth 40 ECTS CP is required. 10 ECTS CP each from this subject-specific knowledge has to have been acquired in two of the following fields: transportation science, mechanical engineering or electrical engineering.
This knowledge must be comparable to that taught in the RWTH Bachelor's programme in Transport Engineering and Mobility.

GRE Test
All applicants are required to provide proof of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test. Applicants who are citizens of a member state of the European Union or the European Economic Area (EEA) and educational residents with a German education ("Bildungsinländer") are exempt from this rule.

Language requirements

A profound level of the English language is required. For this specialization a level corresponding to the level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is necessary.An adequate knowledge of English must be proven by non-native speakers of English who have not acquired their higher education entrance qualification at an English-language institution. The following certificates are recognized:

  • Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) „Internet-based” Test (IBT) with a score of at least 90 points
  • IELTS-Test with a score of at least 5.5
  • Cambridge Test – Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
  • First Certificate in English (FCE) with a grade of at least B
  • A certificate, certifying English skills at the B2 level of the Common European Frame of Reference for Languages, (CEFR). This certificate can be a German Abitur certificate, where it is clear that a student completed English till the end of Qualification Phase 1 – that is grade 11 for the G8 Abitur, otherwise grade 12 – and completed the subject with a least sufficient performance.
  • Placement test of the RWTH Aachen Language Center at the B2 level, that is MK 7 Important Information: This language certificate can only be obtained by individuals, who are already enrolled as students at RWTH Aachen

A profound level of the German language is not required. However, it is recommended to have basic knowledge (level A1) of the German language. If no basic knowledge of the German language is available, it is possible to take part in a German language course at the RWTH, which can be credited (3 CP) for the studies.

If a German course is taken, the course fees for the German language course expire, because the achieved ECTS CP (3 CP) can be credited for the course of study. Accordingly, the German course is free of charge for international RSE students.
