Fees and Finances
Germany is one of the few countries where courses are tuition-free. However, there is a semester fee for administrative matters and a
semester ticket for
almost the entire public transportation system in Germany (excluding long-distance services), as well as a South-Limburg supplement.
The following table provides an overview of the approximate cost per month:
| Accommodation: | between 400 and 600 € per month |
| Food: | between 200 and 300 € per month |
| Health Insurance: | between 100 and 150 € per month |
| Study Materials (including printing etc): | between 20 and 40 € per month |
| Internet and Mobile Phone: | between 20 and 50 € per month |
| Additional costs (clothing, hygiene etc.): | between 50 and 200 € per month |
| Total | between 790 und 1340 € per month |
Please note that to obtain a residence permit, you must provide proof of a minimum personal income of 992 euros per month to the Residents' Registration Office in Aachen. This implies that you must have access to at least 11,904 € to cover your annual living costs in Germany (as of 2025).
To apply for an entry visa, please note the requirements/information provided by the consulates regarding the minimum monthly income.

International students may work in the private sector during the semester or the semester break for up to four months without a work permit. Students can take up full-time
positions for 140
days or part-time positions (up to 4 hours per day) for 280 days. This regulation is also stated on the residence permit.
During term-time, students are allowed to take up jobs with working hours of up to 19 hours per week. Throughout the semester break, students may work full-time, but only for a
maximum of 13 consecutive weeks. To give an example: A student starts a job at a restaurant. He works for 19 hours per week. According to the regulations stated above, the student
is allowed to work for 48 weeks per year. The student's employer is advised to register the number of days the student works to avoid any complications with the
Immigration Office.
Student assistants are more flexible regarding working hours, as the 140/280 full-time and part-time regulations do not apply to them. As a student assistant - the so-called
HiWi -, you are permitted to work up to 19 hours per week throughout the year.
